Michael (Mike) Austin                                                                 << Back

Mike Austin is a general partner in the Professional Management Associates, L.L.C. firm located in Mobile Alabama. The firm specializes in Lean Thinking, Re-Engineering , Strategic Planning, Leadership Training, Executive Coaching and Management Development. His affiliations include, Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, Business Retention and Expansion Committee, and the Business Council of the University of South Alabama.

Prior positions include President and CEO of Mobile Metals International, Mobile, Alabama; President and CEO of Haynes International, Kokomo, Indiana; President and CEO of Tuscaloosa Steel, Tuscaloosa, Alabama; President and CEO of Bayou Steel , LaPlace Louisiana; and General Manager of Soule’ Steel in Carson California.

Austin started his metals career as an engineering trainee with Bethlehem Steel in 1965. His 4 decade career has covered the entire spectrum of Integrated Steel Mills, Mini-Steel Mills, Fabricated Steel Construction, High Performance Specialty Metals and most recently, consulting and teaching Professional Management.

Austin earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Boston University, has done graduate work towards the MBA degree, and recently, has been afforded the opportunity to become the Mitchell College of Business Executive in Residence. He is now teaching Professional Management Courses at the University of South Alabama and is currently co-authoring a book on strategic thinking, innovation, and decision making with Dr. Maes.

Throughout his unique and diverse career he has been a student of “Professional Management”. Iin addition to his role as a turnaround CEO, he has served as director of Manpower Development and Training for National Steel. He has been a frequent guest lecturer at Indiana University and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His Board Position appointments have included Chicago Metallic Corporation, St. Joseph Hospital, Indiana University advisory panel in Kokomo, Indiana; and the Executive Business Council of the University of South Alabama in Mobile.

Austin and his wife Elaine have been married 47 years and have 5 children. Austin was born in London, England came to the United States when he was 7 years old and was raised in New York. After High School Austin joined the U.S. Air Force became a Naturalized Citizen and was trained as an Aircraft Technician and Crew Chief. His hobbies and interest include General Aviation , teaching professional management, and international travel.
